According to the Peoria Journal Star, the number of Caterpillar Inc. white collar employees who plan to take early retirement packages is 2,100, said Caterpillar group president and CFO Brad Halverson. That number will mean fewer people will have to be laid off in the company’s previously announced restructuring plan.
“Just over 50 percent of the people offered the plan took it. I’m extremely happy to say that number will mean fewer people will lose jobs,” Halverson said Thursday.
Another 1,000 Caterpillar salaried and management jobs will be eliminated in the United States by the end of the year, said Halverson, who couldn’t identify how many of those would be from central Illinois. Some of those 1,000 workers will receive layoff notices starting next week, he said.
Caterpillar announced plans last month to slash 10,000 jobs worldwide by 2018 in order to save $1.5 billion.
