CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — The reworking of an interstate split that the Tennessee Department of Transportation commissioner has termed "about the worst interchange in the state of Tennessee" will likely not begin until summer 2019.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that the proposed improvements at the Interstate 75-Interstate 24 split near the Georgia-Tennessee state line are a little behind the original schedule, which called for the estimated $65 million project to start by this fall.
Most of the existing interchange roadways will be moved and straightened, and the plan calls for "flyway" bridges and less dramatic curves.
TDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn says Mississippi-based Neel-Schaffer Inc. is developing a plan outlining basic design information on behalf of the state, and a "design-build" contractor will be selected after this summer.
