The American Road & Transportation Builders Association's Transportation Development Foundation issued a "last call" for applications through April 6 for the 2018 round of its "Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program."

Since 1999, that program has provided up to $5,000 in individual college scholarships to children of highway workers who have been killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.

Last year it distributed 11 scholarships to students from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and South Carolina.

The program is named for two past ARTBA chairmen, Jack and Stan Lanford of Roanoke, Va., who launched it with an initial financial contribution. The foundation said the program is now funded by contributions from highway construction industry executives and firms, state transportation groups and labor organizations.
