"George Voinovich consistently championed strong investment in transportation infrastructure as a mayor, governor and U.S. Senator during a distinguished career that spanned more than 40 years. In doing so, he remained true to his convictions as a budget hawk, arguing that expanded investments be paid for with user fees, and not budget gimmicks.

“He was a leader in the passage of federal highway and transit laws in 1998 and 2005. Along the way, he also fought to reform the transportation conformity provisions of the Clean Air Act.

“George had an uncommon degree of common sense and was refreshingly candid, yet also demonstrated a willingness to work across the aisle on policy issues—qualities in short supply in Washington these days.

“I was proud and privileged to work closely with him. He was always focused on getting things done, not just making political points. His abiding love for his family, strong sense of faith and unwavering commitment to public service were truly admirable.

“The membership of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association extends its deepest sympathies to George's wife, Janet and his three children George, Betsy and Peter. He will be sorely missed.”
