More than 1,700 Volvo technicians from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and other international countries competed in 2009’s Masters Competition, with one goal — to win the golden trophy that showed their skill as Volvo technicians. A U.S. team, ASC Volvo, won first place in North America and second place in the world competition, edged out by the Dutch team Kuiken N.V.

ASC’s team consisted of two field technicians, one from ASC of Charlotte, N.C., and from ASC of Birmingham, Ala.; and the parts manager of ASC of Birmingham, Ala.

The final competition was held at Volvo Training Center in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Five teams competed in Eskilstuna after winning their regional continental competitions.

The parts manager was given 10 questions to answer, and ASC’s whole team had two problems per machine to diagnose. Machines included wheel loaders, excavators, articulated haulers, motor graders and compact equipment. The team had to figure out what repairs and what parts were needed to make the machine operational. Then the team listed the probable causes of failures. They had to demonstrate both practical and theoretical knowledge.

Teams were judged on their skill with mechanical problems, electrical problems and hydraulic problems. The performance scale not only evaluated technical skills, but also examined the team’s handling of tools and their behavior in relation to Volvo’s core values of quality, safety and environmental care.

“We are very proud to have an ASC team win the competition,” said Elon Holley, general manager, Northern Alabama. “We always ensure our technicians can solve any customer’s problems. This competition proves their skill.”
