Underwritten by a $10-million gift from A. James Clark, a new three-story biomedical engineering center will be constructed at The Johns Hopkins University. Clark Construction, based in Bethesda, MD, will build the 60,000-sq.-ft. (5,400 sq m) research facility, which will include 13 faculty laboratories, 10 labs for visiting scientists, four undergraduate teaching labs, classrooms and computer facilities.
With design architect Robert A.M. Stern of New York, HLM Design of Bethesda, MD, has created a facility that will complement the existing buildings on the Homewood campus with a facade of brick and cast stone.
Hipped slate roofs with copper dormers will top the building. Students, faculty and visitors will enter the handsome three-story lobby that incorporates marble and slate flooring, ornamental stair handrails and extensive wood trim.
The project team also includes RMF Engineering of Baltimore, MD, mechanical and electrical engineer; Whitney, Bailey & Cox of Baltimore, MD, site engineer; and SST Planners of Arlington, VA, laboratory design and planning. HLM Design also will serve as the structural engineer. The project is scheduled to complete in the summer of 2001.
