The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation recently named W.M. Jordan Company of Newport News, Va., as the general contractor for a $40 million museum expansion project.
Construction is set to begin the week of Sept. 25 on two museums—the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum and the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. Both facilities will remain open throughout the project, which is estimated to take two years, The Virginia Gazette reported. Construction includes a 65,000-sq.-ft. expansion, and a new façade and entrance. According to a press release from the foundation, the museums will gain 22 percent more exhibition space, The Virginia Gazette reported.
“The expansion of our two world-renowned art museums is an essential element of our core educational mission,” said Colonial Williamsburg President and CEO Mitchell B. Reiss in a statement. “By more appropriately showcasing our outstanding collections and improving the visitor experience, we aim to attract more guests than ever. Entrusting this vital construction work to W.M. Jordan Company will ensure that the Art Museums thrive for generations to come.”
Dedicated donor funds from the foundation's $600 million Campaign for History and Citizenship are paying for the project, The Virginia Gazette reported.
