PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police in Philadelphia say a construction worker has died after he fell into the Delaware River on the job.

Chief Inspector Scott Small says officers were called to Pier 78 in south Philadelphia after 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The man had been working at the pier when he disappeared. His hard hat was seen floating in the water and his car was still parked nearby.

A police marine unit found the man around 9:30 p.m. The man, whose age wasn't released, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

His death is under investigation.
