Crews Reduces Hand Work With Power Curber Unit

A general contractor in Pennsylvania with lots of tight radius curb work estimated that he has taken care of 85 percent of his handwork with the purchase of a Power Curber 5700-B.

“Our goal was to get rid of the hand-set work,” said Kem Vaught, who handles curb crews for Kinsley Construction Co. of York, PA. “We were basically interested in production.”

With the 5700-B, Vaught said, crews do in one day what it takes four days to hand set.

Earlier this year, Kinsley upgraded its two curb machines with the 5700-B, switching to Power Curbers. The decision came when the curb crews faced the construction of a 32-acre (12.9 ha) parking lot with a lot of islands in it and another shopping center parking lot with 180 islands.

Kinsley looked at the 5700-B and the competition before making a purchase decision. The competitive machine was “big and cumbersome and did not work well,” said Vaught. “There were a lot of problems. We couldn’t get enough material in the hopper to go around the radius.”

The 5700-B features an auger conveyor that has increased mixing power to speed production, and it holds enough concrete to get through a tight radius. That saves time and trouble dealing with the ready-mix truck in these tight situations.

Also instrumental in the decision to purchase the 5700-B was the relationship with the dealer, Eastern Equipment Service. “We found that the dealer would jump for us,” said Vaught. “They’re great guys.”

Eastern Equipment, an exclusive Power Curber dealer with two locations in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., worked with the factory to add an auxiliary water tank to Kinsley’s 5700-B, doubling the water capacity on the job to 150 gal. (567.7 L).

In addition to some 180,000 ft. (54,900 m) of curb work per year in state and commercial jobs, Kinsley also does sidewalk applications with the 5700-B.
