TYRE, N.Y. (AP) Construction of a new casino in New York’s Finger Lakes is entering a new phase even as opponents continue their effort to block the Las Vegas-style gambling venue.

The developers of Lago Resort and Casino say that crews are expected to begin work on the casino’s foundation. They hope to open the casino and resort hotel complex in the town of Tyre sometime in early 2017.

Opponents, however, are continuing their efforts to stop the project. Supporters of a nearby racetrack casino and a tribal casino plan to protest Lago at the state Capitol Tuesday.

The move comes after some local residents sued to block Lago, arguing that local officials didn’t properly consider how it would affect the surrounding community when they approved the project.
