The athletics program of Georgia State University (GSU) in downtown Atlanta announced that it had reached a major milestone in its long-anticipated baseball stadium construction, as the city officially approved the land disturbance permit for the project.

With the approval, GSU noted on Dec. 11, 2025, that it had received all necessary clearances to begin building its new baseball facility, a transformational addition to both the university's athletics portfolio and the surrounding Summerhill community within Atlanta.

The project's builder, Albion General Contractors in Sandy Springs, Ga., has already begun moving equipment to the site.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026.

When it is finished, the stadium will provide several key benefits including bringing the baseball program closer to the heart of campus, furthering GSU's investment in the continued development of the surrounding Summerhill neighborhood and creating more opportunities for engagement with students, faculty, staff and alumni at a location just steps from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium, GSU Convocation Center and Georgia State's downtown campus.

The $15.4 million project will be built on the historic site of the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the longtime home of Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves, the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Chiefs pro soccer team, the Peach Bowl and a slew of landmark events, including Olympic baseball in 1996.

The location also marks one of the most significant moments in sports history: Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run on April 8, 1974, as a member of the Braves. Georgia State is deeply committed to honoring Aaron's legacy, beginning with the relocation of the Hank Aaron statue from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium to the proposed baseball stadium's main entrance.

Among other tributes to be announced honoring the former stadium's unique heritage are a commemorative marker in the facility's left field denoting the landing spot of Aaron's home run. The marker will replace the existing chain link fence and block wall erected after the old stadium's demolition.

Beyond honoring history, the new baseball park will feature modern amenities designed to enhance both player development and fan experience. Plans include a turf playing surface, expanded dugouts, upgraded batting and bullpen facilities, new technology infrastructure and improved seating and hospitality spaces.

"This stadium represents more than just a place to play baseball," GSU President Dr. M. Brian Blake said in a news release from the school. "It connects Georgia State to Atlanta's sports legacy and creates a vibrant future for our program and community."

He and other university officials recognize the significance of the stadium project for its community and supporters and promised to share updates on its progress as the facility develops.

"We understand the importance of this project to many," said Charlie Cobb, Georgia State athletics director. "It is exciting for us as well. Additionally, there are still ways to help us expand our scope by financially contributing to the project. Every contribution helps us make this project even more special for our student-athletes, fans and alumni."

Cobb also expressed the school's sincere gratitude to the loyal donors whose generosity helped make the project possible.

Naming partners for the baseball stadium and playing field will be announced once they are approved by the University System of Georgia board of regents. Numerous other naming opportunities remain available for those interested in contributing to the historic project.
