Construction Equipment Guide

As a provider of rental equipment for a variety of applications, Crane Rental Service of Tempe, AZ, needs machines capable of multi-tasking.

On a recent day, the company’s Grove TMS500E left South Tempe at 8:25 a.m. to place a 7,000-lb. sump pump at a roadwork site. Having completed that job by 9:45 a.m., the TMS500E traveled 20 miles to North Phoenix, where a landscaper needed a 20-ft. tree set in a back yard. At 11:20 a.m., the crane was off to South Phoenix, where it placed a 14,000-lb. scrap wood grinder on a stand.

By 1:15 p.m., the TMS500E was back at the shop, ready for the next assignment. The unit is rated at 40 tons (36t) and has a standard boom length of 95 ft. (29 m), and maximum tip height of 146 ft. (44.5 m).

The unit’s operator likes the air-ride suspension for smooth road travel, as well as fast and easy setup.

Also part of the company’s 12-crane fleet, a GMK5240 was selected for work at the Mesa Fire and Police Training Facility in Mesa, AZ. A total of nine air handling units weighing 3,000-4,000 lbs. had to be placed at a new auditorium complex.

The crane’s standard boom length of 197 ft. (60 m) came in handy. With a 240-ton (216t) capacity, the GMK5240 placed the units at a 165- to 175-ft. (50.2 to 53.3 m) radius. Maximum tip height of the model is 322 ft. (98 m).

According to Ed Hass, the company’s vice president, “Crane Rental Service is a family business. My uncle, Bill Foster, began the operation in California in 1964 and has three of his children working there today. I started the Arizona firm in 1983 and today we operate an exclusive Grove fleet out of our yard in Tempe. We’ve been happy with the performance and reliability of the Grove machines.”
