“The first line of defense in keeping the water and contaminants from deteriorating our roads is sealing the surface cracks,” said Tony Fuga, the mayor and member of the road department of Jermyn Borough, a small town located in Lackawanna County, Pa. “The constant freezes and thaws of our Pennsylvania winters speed up the destruction of our roads.”

Working with Stephenson Equipment's Dave Skopek, Fuga and the borough decided to invest in a Stepp Manufacturing asphalt crack sealer. Skopek, a veteran in road maintenance and preservation, works with customers like the borough to promote an approach change that focuses on road preservation.

“Many times, I see a reactive approach instead of a proactive prevention plan,” said Skopek, “This reactive approach can tie-up lots of budget dollars for small towns, but a road preservation approach as simple as sealing, or renting a small mill repairing and sealing, the cost is minimal and the dollars spent are spent much more efficiently. It gets them roads that last many, many years longer.”

Fuga and the Jermyn Borough decided on a plan to prevent the destruction of their roads.

“By using the Stepp crack sealer to seal out the water and contaminants, we should be able to extend the life of our roads by many years,” Fuga said. “This investment should pay-off many times over for the borough in the coming years.”
