JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) Joplin has moved into the demolition phase of its tornado cleanup.

The Joplin Globe reported that Joplin city manager Mark Rohr said Aug. 15 damaged houses can now be demolished.

The announcement came after Joplin and Duquesne city officials signed off on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s debris removal efforts. Rohr said only some debris that was moved to curbs before Aug. 14 still needs to be removed.

Rohr said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors that removed debris will stay until Aug. 21 to remove demolition debris.

Meanwhile, 36 families spent the weekend moving into mobile homes provided by FEMA. Eventually, the two mobile home parks will accommodate 346 families. Another 140 families are living in FEMA homes at commercial mobile home parks.
