LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Crews began work on widening Interstate 64 just west of the Shelby-Jefferson county line.

Department of Highways spokeswoman Andrea Clifford said the highway will be widened to three lanes in each direction.

Clifford said two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction during most of the construction. Lane closures that are necessary will occur during overnight hours.

The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 55 mph for the duration of the $34.2 million project.

Gohmann Asphalt and Construction is expected to complete the project in the fall of 2010.
