As most contractors know, working in confined and congested areas can not only be hazardous to their health but their machines’ health as well. When Komatsu introduced its PC128US-2 and PC228USLC-2 hydraulic excavators. Furnival Machinery Company, based in Hatfield, PA, knew the machine’s tight tail swing would provide the prescription for its customers’ needs.
“The machines are designed to work in congested and confined areas with the same productivity and better lift capacity as their standard counterparts,” said Walt Joachim, vice president of sales, Furnival Machinery. “The tight tail swing on these excavators allows contractors to work without fear of damaging their equipment. We’ve seen excavators ruined by swinging into trees or poles, and most of the time, the contractors’ own trucks.”
The tight tail swing radius of the enables the excavators to significantly minimize the work envelope and operate in extremely confined work settings either inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines.
Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks.
Other advantages with the tight tail swing, said Joachim, is that contractors don’t have to close an extra lane when working on a highway, and safety is increased.

Productivity
The 86-hp (64 kW), 28,000-lb. (12,701 kg) PC128US-2 features the same productivity and performance as the medium-weight class Komatsu PC150-6.
It features a 20,900 lb. (9,480 km) bucket digging force and 13,450-lb. (6,101 kg) arm force and is powered by a turbocharged Komatsu S4D102E four-cylinder, water-
cooled engine.
The 128-hp (95 kW), 50,485-lb. (22,900 kg) PC228USLC-2 is comparable to a 23-ton (21 t) Komatsu PC200-6 with a 28,218-lb. (12,799 kg) bucket digging force and 20,502-lb. (9,300 kg) arm force and is equipped with a Komatsu S6D102E six cylinder, water-cooled engine.
