MDOT Makes Progress On Northeast Mississippi Projects

MDOT is making progress on multiple road and bridge projects in northeast Mississippi, including capacity expansions on State Route 15, mill and overlay on I-22 and U.S. highways, safety improvements, and bridge repairs. Key contractors are advancing work to improve travel safety reduce congestion and enhance infrastructure.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced updates on several construction and maintenance projects in northeast Mississippi.

Capacity Project On State Route 15 in Tippah County — A massive project to construct 10.5 mi. of the new 4-lane alignment of State Route 15 from Union County to Ripley and a State Route 2 connector in Blue Mountain is progressing in Tippah County.

Work is ongoing at the State Route 4 and State Route 2 interchanges, along the new SR 2 alignment, and the mainline section of SR 15 near the beginning of the project near Cotton Plant to the end north of Ripley.

This project will create a much-needed bypass of Blue Mountain and Ripley to reduce congestion, decrease drive time and create a much safer four-lane route for travelers.

The $194.9 million contract was awarded to W.G. Yates & Sons of Jackson. Work is expected to be completed in summer 2028.

Capacity Project On State Route 15 in Union County — A massive $58.7 million project continues in Union County to construct nearly 6 mi. of new parallel lanes of State Route 15 to complete the four-lane connection of Pontotoc to New Albany.

The contractor has placed final asphalt and is now working on clay gravel placement and final stripe.

This project will be the last section of SR 15 to be 4-laned from Pontotoc to New Albany and will provide a much safer and economical route for travelers.

The contract was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting of Nesbit. Work is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

Mill, Overlay On I-22 in Union County — Work continues in Union County on the mill and overlay of 14 mi. of I-22 from State Route 30 to the Pontotoc County line.

Crews are currently digging out bridge approach slabs, clearing right-of-way and performing mainline paving. The project includes LED light upgrades to the Blue Springs and Sherman interchanges.

The $27 million project was awarded to APAC Mississippi Inc. of Jackson. Work is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2027.

Bridge Repair On State Route 30 Over Tallahatchie River in Union County — Progress continues on bridge repairs on State Route 30 over the Tallahatchie River in Union County.

The contractor has implemented one-lane traffic signals, placed rip-rap on the embankments and repaired pile encasements. Hydro demolition of the bridge deck is now set to begin.

The $2.2 million contract was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. of Nesbit and work should be completed this winter.

Safety Improvements On State Route 413, State Route 50 in Choctaw, Lowndes Counties — Work is set to begin on a safety improvement project on State Route 413 and State Route 50 in Choctaw and Lowndes counties. Work will be performed on SR 413 from State Route 12 to French Camp, and on SR 50 from Lindy Drive to the Alabama state line.

This project involves the installation of audible and standard thermoplastic pavement markings and raised markers on SR 413 in Choctaw County and State Route 50 in Lowndes County.

The $418 thousand project was awarded to J.C. Cheek Contractors Inc. of Kosciusko. Work is scheduled to be completed this summer.

Safety Improvements at State Route 76, State Route 23 in Itawamba County — Work has begun on safety improvements at the State Route 76 and State Route 23 intersection in Itawamba County.

This project includes the installation of a permanent Restricted Crossing U-turn (RCUT). An RCUT is a type of Reduced Conflict Intersection used primarily on 4-lane divided highways and differs from conventional intersections by re-routing left-turn and through vehicles from the side road. This greatly reduces conflict points and is proven to reduce severe accidents.

The $3.3 million contract was awarded to Phillips Contracting Co. Inc of Columbus. Work is scheduled to be completed in spring 2027.

Bridge Repair On Old West Point Road Over U.S. 82 in Lowndes County — Work is ongoing to replace a damaged bridge span and raise the bridge to allow more clearance underneath on Old West Point Road over U.S. 82 in Lowndes County.

The contractor has removed Span 2, set new beams, and has raised the remainder of the spans. Next the contractor will pour the new bridge deck on Span 2 and tie Old West Point Road into the new bridge deck.

The $1.7 million contract was awarded to Key Constructors LLC of Madison and is expected to be completed this winter.

Overlay Project On U.S. 82 in Lowndes County — A mill and overlay project is under way on U.S. 82 in Lowndes County.

This project will repair a 7-mi. stretch from 1 mi. east of Military Road to the Alabama state line.

The $9 million contract was awarded to Falcon Contracting Co. Inc. of Columbus and should wrap up this fall.

Mill, Overlay Project On U.S. 45 in Monroe County — Progress is being made on the mill and overlay of U.S. 45 from the beginning of the 4-lane divide to State Route 145 in Monroe County.

The contractor has completed main line paving and is now paving county road tie-ins. Work remaining includes gravel placement and the installation of new stripe.

Falcon Contracting Co. Inc. was awarded the $3.5 million contract and should be completed this summer.

Bridge Repairs On U.S. 278 Over Buttahatchie River in Monroe County — Work is ongoing to repair a bridge on U.S. 278 over Buttahatchie river in Monroe County.

The contractor has completed the fiber reinforced polymer beam wrap and spall repairs. The next phase of work includes bridge deck repairs.

Key Constructors LLC was awarded the $7.9 million contract and is expected to wrap up this summer.

Mill, Overlay On U.S. 45A in Monroe County — Work is progressing on the mill and overlay of 10 mi. of U.S. 45A from the Chickasaw County line to the Lee County line in Monroe County.

The scope of the project includes slope repair and turn lane extensions at Shepard Road. The contractor has completed the slide repair, digouts, turn lanes and paved ditches. The contractor has completed the scrub seal application on the old pavement and will begin overlaying with a top lift of asphalt.

The $14.6 million contract was awarded to Cook & Sons Construction LLC of Smithville. Work is scheduled to be completed spring 2027.

Mill, Overlay On State Route 389 in Oktibbeha County — Progress is being made on a mill and overlay project on 10 mi. of State Route 389 from U.S. 82 to the Clay County line in Oktibbeha County.

The contractor has completed tree clearing operations and repairing failed areas and is currently paving the mainline. Once the mainline paving is complete, the contractor will pave county road and driveway tie-ins.

The $6.5 million contract was awarded to Falcon Contracting Co. Inc. and should wrap up this summer.

Bridge Replacements On State Route 346 in Pontotoc County — Work is wrapping up on the replacement of two bridges on State Route 346 over Mud Creek in Pontotoc County.

Bridge work is complete and the contractor is completing mainline paving, placing shoulder material and final stripe.

Ste-Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford was awarded the $4.9 million contract. Work is expected to be completed this fall.

Scrub Seal, Overlay On State Route 346 in Pontotoc County — Work is progressing on the scrub seal and overlay on 9 mi. of State Route 346 from beginning of state maintenance to State Route 15 in Pontotoc County.

The contractor has completed replacing pipes. Remaining work includes repairing failed areas and scrub seal portions of the project.

The $3.9 million project was awarded to W.G. Construction Co. Inc. of Ripley. Work is expected to be completed this summer.

Mill, Overlay On U.S. 278 in Pontotoc County — A mill and overlay project continues on 6.5 mi. of U.S. 278 from west of State Route 338 to State Route 15 in Pontotoc County.

The contractor is currently overlaying the mainline.

The $5.2 million project was awarded to W.G. Construction Co. Inc. Work should wrap up this summer.

Mill, Overlay Project On State Route 145 in Prentiss County — A mill and overlay project is set to start on State Route 145 from the 4-lane section near Cedar Drive to State Route 4 in Prentiss County.

The $2.8 million project was awarded to APAC Mississippi of Jackson and will be completed this summer.

Mill, Overlay On State Route 397 in Winston County — Work is set to begin on the mill and overlay of 9 mi. of State Route 397 from the Kemper County line to Robertson Rd.

The $2.9 million project was awarded to APAC Mississippi Inc. and work is scheduled to be completed this summer.
