Construction Equipment Guide

The National Asphalt Pavement Association Research and Education Foundation (NAPAREF) announced that a custom-built “Asphalt Smooth Rider” chopper will be raffled off during the World of Asphalt 2009 Show & Conference, March 9 to 12, 2009, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

The proceeds will benefit the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) in Auburn, Ala., a leading institution for asphalt pavement research. Funds will be used to purchase laboratory equipment for this institution that includes a 40,000-sq.-ft. research center, laboratories and teaching facilities and a 1.7-mi. Pavement Test Track.

The Asphalt Smooth Rider was designed, fabricated and built by Kevin Brooks of Thunder Mountain Motor Sports (TMMS), a creator of custom motorcycles. The heart of the bike is a polished and plated 113-in. S&S mill. A Billet 4-U 3-in. open primary with a Rivera Pro Clutch couples it to a six-speed right-side-drive transmission. Carburetor duties are handled by an S&S super G unit. Intake air is funneled by a chrome velocity stack which is fired by the high-output ignition system.

The winner of this custom chopper also will receive a trailer for transporting it.
