Clarkston, MI students will now have the chance to pursue construction technology classes, thanks to a new district program.

A construction technology pathway at Clarkston Junior High School will be offered to ninth and tenth grade students with the aim of introducing them to skills that could be used in their future careers.

Clarkston Junior High School teachers Jeff Peariso and Steve Wyckoff will lead the program.

“We wanted to give our kids more opportunities,” said Wyckoff, emphasizing that there is a growing need for workers in skilled trades.

The construction technology program will be offered starting fall 2017. Students in the program will be taught a hybrid of math and construction skills, directly applying what they learn in the math portion of the program to their construction projects.

Construction projects will include birdhouses, toolboxes and gradually work up to larger projects.

Peariso said about 75 students are expected to take part in the program.

“We want to give everybody the chance to explore different careers,” Peariso said.
