The Smooth Edge Tamper is an automated replacement of the hand tamper that offers vibratory compaction on pavement surfaces that were previously too long, steep or narrow to be compacted by machine or by hand. Manufactured in the United States, the Smooth Edge Tamper enables contractors to compact the edges of commercial paving installations that were previously left un-tamped, according to the manufacturer.

Features include a lightweight design that provides instant mobility for one worker compacting potholes and tamping out roller lines. The 27-lb. (12.2 kg) machine puts out 2,500 lbs. (1,133 kg) of true vibratory compaction in two passes, on a 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) lift of Type 7f asphalt top. It travels at speeds up to 24 ft. (7.3 m) per minute and offers up to 1,200 hits every seven seconds.

Reliable 4-stroke Honda power is delivered to the head via a Chromalloy drive shaft. The heavy-duty tamper head is 24 in. (60.9 cm) long and tapers from 7 in. (17.7 cm) wide in the center to 6 in. (15.2 cm) wide on the ends. One side is curved to allow for tamping against all types of structures, such as walls, foundations, light poles, bollards and curbs. The tamper can be laid down for compacting low headroom spaces with as little as 4.5 in. (11.4 cm) of clearance. Rubber-mounted anti-vibration handles reduce worker fatigue.
