The Marcellus Shale formation is believed to hold as much as 4,359 trillion cu. ft. of natural gas covering a span of 95,000 sq. mi. Located below the states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, Maryland and other northern states, the Marcellus Shale encompasses approximately 60 percent of Pennsylvania alone. Geologists estimate this amount of natural gas could supply the United States for 20 years or more.
