CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) A nonprofit organization in suburban Cleveland is fighting the foreclosure crisis with construction tools, energy-efficient fixtures and a vision of higher-quality housing.
The Cleveland Heights Home Repair Resource Center plans to renovate and sell a vacant four-bedroom house it obtained through the city and a federal program aimed at nonprofit renovations.
Executive Director Kathryn Lad said the center hopes to fix up 11 other vacant houses in the city this year, using profits to pay for future renovations.
She said the goal is creating properties that add value to their neighborhoods.
The group has used volunteers to renovate seven homes since 1988 but plans to hire professional contractors for help this time around.
