Ohio Construction Jobs Up, Unemployment Rate Unchanged

According to state officials, Ohio's unemployment rate remained unchanged from April to May of this year; however, the state did see a rise in construction industry employment.

Between April and May, Ohio's unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3 percent—higher than the national rate. The national rate was 3.8 percent in May, which was an improvement from 3.9 percent in April.

For both Ohio and national unemployment rates, improvements were made from the last year. In May of 2017, the national unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, while Ohio's unemployment rate was 5.1 percent.

According to Ohio's Job and Family Services Department, Ohio's nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased by 22,600 jobs from April to May.

The report indicated job gains in sectors including: trade transportation and utilities, fiancial services, leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, educational and health services and other services. Government employment in Ohio also increased by 2,500 between April and May of this year.

Job gains also were reported in construction, manufacturing, mining and logging.

In fact, Ohio saw an increase of approximately 6,000 jobs within the construction industry in May.
