Demolition of the last Marine Foundations of San Francisco's Old Bay Bridge will continue Oct. 14, 15 and 16, as the third and final phase of the project nears completion. Caltrans said it will demolish Piers E11, E12 and E13 of the 1936 concrete East Span with a series of controlled, underwater implosions, which will last less than 10 seconds.

Demolition of the East Span started Sept. 2, and will continue every other weekend through mid-November 2017. By combining the demolition of multiple piers on certain dates, Caltrans said the work will be completed a year ahead of schedule, saving taxpayers $10 million.

"The innovative demolition acceleration plan is a win for this project on several levels. Not only are environmental resource agencies on board, but we are looking at a year in time savings and millions of dollars in cost savings for the public," said Caltrans Director Malcom Dougherty.

Caltrans said to expect rolling closures on both the Bay Bridge and the Bike and Pedestrian Path as demolition commences.
