BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) Outdoor demolition has begun on a downtown mall in Vermont's largest city.

MyChamplainValley.com reports crews started tearing down Burlington Town Center on Dec. 14. Developers are planning to turn the area into Burlington City Place, which would include 272 housing units, 230,000 sq. ft. of office space and more than 900 parking spaces.

The Burlington City Council approved the $225 million project in October.

The project caused concern among monthly customers who use the mall's current 500-space parking garage. Developer Don Sinex said the garage will be the last to be demolished, and customers have been moved to other locations.

Sinex did not share potential tenants, but he said one “large tenant” is interested in the space.

The redevelopment is set to be complete in 2020.
