RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The N.C. Department of Transportation has begun work to raise and level N.C. Highway 12 north and south of the temporary bridge on Pea Island in Dare County.
A statement from the agency said the project will raise the elevation of N.C. 12 up to 18 in. (45.7 cm) on the ocean side, or northbound lane, and 6 in. (15 cm) on the sound side, or southbound lane. One lane of N.C. 12 will be closed while work is taking place. Flag crews will direct traffic through the site.
While ocean overwash is not a regular occurrence and has not resulted in any recent closure of N.C. 12, the department has had to shut down a single lane of the road in the past to allow traffic to safely pass through the area.
