SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A failing stretch of Interstate 29 in eastern South Dakota is going to cost nearly $25 million to repair, and local officials want to know why.
State transportation officials are preparing to fix a 23-mi. (37 km) stretch of I-29 north of Sioux Falls that's only 20 years old but deteriorating faster than expected. Improvements are slated for 2017 in the northbound and southbound lanes between the Renner and Madison exits.
The Argus Leader reported that Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County officials want to know whether poor materials are to blame for the expensive problem.
State Transportation Department engineer Travis Dressen said weather and traffic can affect the lifespan of concrete pavement. But the cause of the deterioration is unknown.
