Reconstruction Planned for ’Dangerous’ Interstate-295 Stretch in Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) Transportation planners hope some changes in the works for Interstate 295 will make drivers safer.

The Delaware River and Bay Authority and the Delaware Department of Transportation are planning a two-year, $26 million reconstruction of I-295 north to the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The rebuild will establish a clearer path for merging and exiting cars. Currently, drivers have to zigzag across I-295 between two major interchanges. John Jones with the DRBA calls that stretch “one of the most dangerous areas on Delaware highways.’’

The project began June 23. All lanes will remain open during the construction. Only the shoulders and the median will be closed.

The DRBA is responsible for all ramps and roads in Delaware leading to the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
