Sakai America recently introduced four new, small double drum steel and combination steel/pneumatic tire rollers.

The new double drums, the SW320-1 and SW330-1, follow a new modular design concept by Sakai engineers.

These machines offer a high frequency of 4,000 vpm, which translates to higher operating speeds, while still maintaining the industry standard of 10 to 12 impacts per foot.

With drum widths of 47 and 51 in. (119 and 130 cm), respectively, these new rollers promote rapid compaction and smoothness on smaller scale jobs like municipal roads, driveways, parking lots, sports courts and bicycle paths.

For applications that demand a combination of both vibratory drum and pneumatic tire, Sakai’s TW320-1 and TW330-1 fit the bill. These models feature 47- and 51-in. vibratory drums on the front end for fast compaction; and the kneading action of pneumatic tires on the rear for surface finishing.

All four models feature a hydrostatic drive on both ends of the machine. These dual drive systems ensure that materials will always be pulled beneath the drums or tires to ensure compaction, while avoiding shoving and checking of the mix.

Sakai’s new sliding bucket seat system provides 360-degree visibility and an enhanced view of both drum edges. It comes standard on all four models. For safety, and also provided as standard equipment, are seat belts and ROPS. The ROPS are foldable for ease of transport and storage of the rollers.

Sakai’s shock isolation system at the drum and operating platforms, keep vibration moving toward the material and away from the operator and critical components of the roller. Also standard on all models, is a powerful, yet fuel-efficient 35 hp (26 kW), Kubota D1703M-ET01 diesel engine.

Unlike any other small roller line in this class, Sakai provides multiple braking systems — a hydrostatic service brake at the operator’s station, spring-applied, hydraulically released parking and emergency brakes and a simple, yet effective automotive-type foot brake.

One of the key ingredients in Sakai’s plan to keep moving and shaking, are its water spray systems. These are designed to keep the drums wet to keep asphalt from sticking. These systems feature long-lasting brass spray nozzles, a triple filtration system, emergency back-up pumps and a drainage system for clean out and winterization. A water-saving, intermittent spray timer, also standard, is designed to lessen pit stops for water.

To prevent asphalt pick-up by the pneumatic tires of the TW320-1 and TW330-1, a release agent spray system is included. A spray control valve automatically adjusts the flow of the release agent.
