SACRAMENTO (AP) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to spend more than $10 million to get idled construction workers back on the job.

California’s housing slump has left many carpenters, and steel and masonry workers jobless.

The state program will provide job-training and help linking those workers with employers. The governor said they could be put to work rebuilding schools, levees and freeways.

The announcement comes just a day after Schwarzenegger gave a robust assessment of California’s economic strength. Sacramento is facing a $16 billion budget deficit through June 2009, tied in part to the weak housing market.
