DETROIT (AP) Seven demolition firms have submitted bids with hopes of being selected for the job of razing most of Tiger Stadium.
The Detroit Free Press reports demolition work could begin in early 2008 if the city’s Economic Development Corp. votes to award a contract at its next meeting on Dec. 11.
Whichever firm wins the contract will have to comply with Detroit’s plans to preserve a corner of the old ballpark as a community center, memorial or museum.
The playing field and dugouts also will be saved. The bulk of the stadium will be redeveloped for retail and residential use.
Estimates place the cost of demolition at around $2 million to $3 million.
The stadium has been empty since the Tigers moved to Comerica Park in 2000.
