Building strong relationships. In business, relationships can be the difference between growth and stagnancy. Trucco Construction is dedicated to that principle. It recognizes that developing a relationship is as important as developing the site. Through delivering quality and efficiency in every facet of its work, Trucco will accept no less than complete satisfaction at the close of a project. Many central Ohio developers have realized that they have partnered with a company that not only believes in those ideals, but also displays them throughout the project.
With a reputation built by meeting and exceeding its clients’ goals, Trucco Construction reflects the character of a family-owned business that has grown quickly since its establishment. CEO Mark Trucco founded the company in 1990 after 12 years in the construction industry.
Over the years, Trucco Construction has developed into one of the larger site development contractors in the region, with more than 130 employees, including Trucco’s brother Mitch, who as president oversees much of the day-to-day functions of the company. The company’s steady growth can be attributed to the relationships it has built in Ohio over the past decade. From the outset, the major problem of the company was developing a reliable customer base, but through taking care of current customers Trucco has found a wealth of repeat business.
In fact, over the past several years Trucco Construction has been listed several times by Business First newspaper as one of the top 50 fastest growing companies in the Columbus, OH, area. As the Trucco Companies have grown, it has diversified, now specializing in a field of tasks including site development, earthmoving, paving/road construction and underground utilities.
Trucco Construction manages projects throughout the Central Ohio region from the company’s headquarters in Powell, OH. It utilizes an efficient computer system that incorporates all of the estimating, scheduling, accounting and equipment tracking.
Recent Projects
Trucco Construction has been involved in several large projects over the past year. The crowning jewel was the Polaris Fashion Mall project. This massive project in Columbus, located on Polaris Parkway, was developed by Glimcher Corporation. The plan called for the construction of nearly 1.5 million sq. ft. of retail space in a mall setting. Trucco Construction was responsible for the installation of all utilities including sanitary, storm and water, as well as box culverts and con-spans. The company worked in coordination with the assembled team of Triad CM and Glimcher to meet all timelines for an October 2001 completion.
Another recent project was the extension of Perimeter Loop road in Dublin. This road construction project called for the completion of all phases of work by Trucco Construction. The phases included the excavation of the roadway, installation of utilities, asphalt paving and curb/gutter installation. This project hit the desired schedule and the open road allowed for other companies to begin plans for commercial building lots.
In January 2000, Trucco was registered by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and in 2002 was a prequalified contractor for state highway projects up to $80 million. This certification legitimizes the hard work the company has done to develop the road construction capabilities of the company. This qualification includes clearing, building removal, roadway excavation and embankment construction, incidental grading, soil stabilization, aggregate bases, flexible paving and replacement, rigid paving and replacement, pavement planning/milling/scarification, sawing, structure removal, level 1 bridge, reinforcing and structural steel, joints/joint sealers, caissons/drilled shafts, structure repairs, earth retaining structures, drainage, fence, waterproofing, landscaping, trucking, and finally, piling.
The first project for Trucco Construction, through ODOT, was a highway resurfacing project on Route 4 between 36 and 42. The task included an 11.4-mi. (18.3 km) section of roadway and was once again completed on time by the Trucco paving group.
Trucco Construction is involved in a variety of other projects this time of year. On June 19, it, along with various members of the Franklin County and Hilliard communities, broke ground on the Britton Road project. This project will mark an important improvement in the Franklin County roadway system in the Hilliard area. A portion of the project called for approximately 30,000 yds. (27,432 m) to be excavated. In order to keep this job up to speed, Equipment Manager Eric Berenstein called AIM Attachments in search of an efficient solution. After discussing the dilemma, Sales Manager Jamie O’Dell, in coordination with the AIM engineering department, designed a special high-capacity 72-in. (183 cm) bucket for the application. The 72-in. (183 cm) heavy-duty bucket was then linked to Trucco’s Hitachi EX450 excavator. As soon as the bucket was ready to go, Trucco put it into action on the excavation portion of the project. The bucket, with a capacity of 4.88 cu. yds. (3.7 cu m), can be piled high with dirt, making quick work of the excavation.
O’Dell was on site to see the efficiency of the bucket. “The long line of dump trucks really moved steadily — the excavator virtually filled up the truck beds in three scoops,” he relayed.
Berenstein also was satisfied with the attachment. “The bucket turned out really nice. We’re very impressed with its quality and capabilities.”
The collaboration between Trucco Construction and AIM Attachments had the desired result, said O’Dell. “It’s very satisfying to be able to develop a special product that fits the needs of a customer.” As the project begins to turn to the next phase, everyone is optimistic that Trucco will comfortably stay ahead of projections.
The Outlook
Finding reliable business partners can be an uphill struggle, but the future is optimistic for Trucco Construction. Through successful business transactions, Trucco and AIM Attachments have established a relationship that will continue for years to come.
Trucco is currently involved in several large projects including the new Dublin Jerome High School and the Pickerington Junior and Senior High School buildings. Over the past 30 days, Trucco’s work on the Dublin project, managed by Ruscilli Construction, has included continued earthmoving, lime stabilization operations, earth fill for building pad construction and the student parking lot, utilities including storm/sanitary sewer and water installation, and the stone base/first course of asphalt in the staff parking lot.
