The Vermeer Navigator HDD simulator uses the same controls found on Vermeer horizontal directional drills from the D10X15 S3 to the D220x300 S3 Navigator horizontal directional drill, so it is easy for operators to quickly adapt what they learn and apply to the job site.

The Vermeer Navigator HDD simulator gives utility companies and contractors a cost-effective way of training crew members for operating a horizontal directional drilling rig. The virtual hands-on simulator delivers the realistic experience of sitting behind the controls of a Vermeer horizontal directional drill using standard controls and an authentic Vermeer Navigator HDD seat. This combination educates the user while simultaneously reinforcing muscle memory.

"Training operators is a real challenge for the industry right now," said Tod Michael, product manager of trenchless products at Vermeer. "We created the Navigator HDD simulator to mimic the experience of operating a real drill, and the programming includes a typical project an operator could face any day. Also, by using the simulator instead of an actual drill, there will be less wear and tear on equipment and tooling every time a new operator is trained."

The simulator gives the user a chance to compare in real-time their actual drilling path to the planned bore path in the program. A simulated underground view provides better understanding of the concept of horizontal directional drilling to new workers and helps experienced operators better hone their skills. In addition, trainees can be scored for their drilling techniques which include details like failure to grease a connection, ensuring proper mud flow, rod handling and more.

The Vermeer simulator is easy to set up and install; the operator's station features built-in caster wheels and easy-to-follow on-screen setup prompts.

"The Vermeer Navigator HDD simulator can help contractors train their crew and promote growth and knowledge within the industry," said Michael. "It complements our more in-depth operator training programs — the Vermeer HDD Circuit training program."

The Vermeer Navigator HDD simulator is currently only available in the United States.
