SEPTA is working in partnership with the city of Philadelphia and PennDOT on the complete replacement of the Woodland Avenue bridge, located on Woodland Avenue between 47th and 48th streets, over the tracks for SEPTA's Media/Elwyn Regional Rail line. The bridge is used by SEPTA trolley routes 11 and 36.

Street closures for the construction began March 18, 2018, and the project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2019.

The bridge, which was constructed in the 1920s, has severely deteriorated due to age, weather and traffic. Weight restrictions are currently in place on the bridge due to its condition. Replacement is necessary for continued safe, reliable trolley service and for local vehicular traffic flow.

In addition to the bridge replacement, the project will include the reconstruction of street, trolley tracks and sidewalks. The new track will result in reduced sound, as the continuous welded rail will eliminate rail joints; reduced vibration because the new rail is encased in an insulated rubber boot; and a smoother ride due to the new and improved track components. The new paving also will reduce noise and vibration.

During construction, Route 11 and 36 trolleys will be detoured to Chester Avenue between 49th Street and the 40th Street Portal. All streets in the construction areas will be closed to thru traffic, but local traffic will be permitted up to construction sites. Emergency, trash and delivery vehicles will have access to the limits of construction. Parking will not be permitted in the area or adjacent to the tracks being reconstructed, however, exceptions will be made for those with special needs. Walking access for businesses will be arranged.

Normal construction hours will be Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Night work may be required to maintain the project schedule.
