The website AL.com is reporting that a construction worker was taken to the local hospital this morning after being trapped under a piece of heavy equipment at a construction site on Birmingham, Alabama's southside.

Workers were pouring concrete at the site on 7th Avenue South and Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. when a "heavy piece of equipment" fell on a man and pinned him down.

Lt. B.W. Johnson with Birmingham Fire and Rescue said that the equipment appeared to be a moving arm of some kind.

Firefighters rescued the man in about 30 minutes. He was taken to UAB Hospital with leg injuries.

Johnson said that this morning's incident was "a difficult rescue." He said firefighters had to remove the pressure of the equipment to free the worker.

While this morning's rescue was not common, Johnson said that Birmingham firefighters train for construction site rescues.

"A lot of construction is going on downtown," he said.
