ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York state will give more than $56 million to local governments in the state's capital region and Mohawk valley to pay for water projects.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the grants Aug. 5. They'll support 30 projects in cities such as Albany, Schenectady, Utica, Oneonta and Troy.

Specifically, the funding will help pay for the design and construction of wastewater treatment plants, sewer systems, water mains and drinking water infrastructure.

The state also provides no-interest and low-interest loans to local governments looking to upgrade or replace water systems.

Cuomo, a Democrat, said the state's assistance will help local cities and towns improve water quality while reducing the burden on local taxpayers.
