New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. (NES&L), of New Enterprise, PA, played a role in the rescue of nine coal miners trapped underground for 77 hours in Sipesville, PA, according to the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA).
When rescuers issued a call for assistance, NES&L was already at the site hauling stone for drilling equipment platforms. During the ordeal, NES&L hauled 47 yds. (43 m) of concrete, approximately 350 tons (315 t) of st one, and 10 light plants to the rescue site.
NES&L’s Mark Zambanini also is Sipesville’s fire chief and was on the scene from beginning to end. In total, 16 NES&L employees worked day and night providing concrete for well casings and emergency lighting.
NES&L poured concrete for the casing at the first hole and hauled stone to the site in order to bring the large drill into the site. Later that day, NES&L hauled light plants to the water-well drilling operation and hauled concrete for four of six well casings to drill 24-in. (61 cm) holes to place 300-hp (224 kW) pumps into the lowest point of the mine.
