Recently, a Favco M760D-II diesel-powered luffing boom crane was purchased by Metro Steel for use on projects in the New York City area. The crane was used at the construction site of the Atlantic Center, a 25-story combined commercial and residential project in Brooklyn. A second Favco M760D-II crane rented from New York Crane also was being used on the job.
Steve Isaacson, of the Metro Steel division of Interstate Iron Works, said he liked the Favco crane because of its high capacity — 141,000 lbs. (63,956 kg) — and rapid hook speed, which can be as fast as 535 fpm (163 mpm).
For confined areas like those found in New York, luffing boom cranes are especially useful for heavy, fast lifting because they have a small “foot print.” Unlike the design of hammerhead cranes, there’s little overhang so air space intrusion on adjacent property is minimized.
