A new crane operator certification program is now accredited by the American National Standards Institute. First introduced in late 2006, the certification is a collaboration of The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), North American Crane Bureau (NACB), and Prov.

The NCCER/NACB Crane Operator Certification Program is intended to identify crane operators who meet minimum criteria for certification, stimulate the improvement of crane operation and establish crane operations as a certifiable profession. Tests are available in four categories: telescopic boom, lattice boom, boom truck and industrial/all-purpose cranes.
Written assessments are administered at NCCER Accredited Assessment Centers, and the practical examinations are given by certified practical examiners. Practical examiner certification workshops are offered nationwide by NACB. Tests are graded by Prov computers. One of the significant points of this program is the on-demand nature of the testing. Testing is structured so a crane operator can take the written assessment and practical examination and receive results back on the same day. Certification is good for five years.
